Report of Blaenavon Civic Society Meeting – May 2019

At our May meeting, the Blaenavon Civic Society discussed how we will get involved in the Blaenavon Townscape Heritage Programme (THP), which is being delivered until the end of 2021 thanks to the support of the National Lottery Heritage Fund.

We intend to host a variety of events and practical activities over the next few years that will help residents learn more about the significance of the town and why it is important to look after our historic buildings. The Civic Society will work closely with the Townscape Heritage Programme team on this in the hope that we can make a lasting difference to the town.

There was a discussion on buildings at risk within the World Heritage Site and also an update on Park Street School, which is set to be demolished this month. We have been busy putting together a record of the Park Street School site and its history, meaning that even though the site will be lost, its interesting architecture and community significance won’t be forgotten.

We were also pleased to launch our new Civic Society website, which we can use to keep the community up to date with our work and share knowledge and useful information with others. The website is in its infancy, but it will grow. Any ideas for content would be appreciated! We will also be getting active on social media.

We are on the look out for new members, so feel free to contact us if you are interested!
